ECE Department Remembers Dr. Wilford D. "Red" Raburn
Dr. Wilford D. "Red" Raburn, a retired professor of the ECE Department died on
July 9 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 73. A native of Hamilton,
Alabama, and resident of Spanish Fort, Raburn served as associate dean of the
College of Engineering and acting chair of the department of electrical
engineering from 1992 until his retirement in 1998.
Raburn received his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering and
master of arts degree in mathematics from the University of Alabama, and his
master of science and doctorate in electrical engineering from the
University of New Mexico.
Prior to joining the USA faculty in 1987 as a professor of electrical
engineering, Raburn served as a member of the senior professional staff at
Martin Marietta Aerospace in Orlando, Fla. Other former positions included
section head at the Harris Corporation in Melbourne, Fla., electrical
engineering professor at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, section head
of A.C. Electronics in Milwaukee, Wis., and professional staff member
at Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, N.M. He published numerous
engineering articles during his distinguished career, including ones on thermal
second breakdown and laser simulation.
Raburn was a member of several local and national professional organizations,
including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Mobile
Area Council of Engineers. He was honored in 2002 when MACE, in conjunction with
the USA College of Engineering, established the Wilford D. "Red" Raburn
Scholarship in engineering.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce; two sons, two daughters, and several
grandchildren.
Dr. Mohammad S. Alam and Dr. M. Tanrioven received the IEEE Energy Systems Committee Prize Paper Award for a paper on "Modeling and Power Quality Evaluation of a PEM Fuel Cell Based Power System" presented at the 2004 IEEE Industry Applications Society Annual Meeting.
Dr. Mohammad S. Alam, Professor and Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received the 2005 Excellence in Research Award, College of Engineering, University of South Alabama, Mobile, Alabama.
Dr. Arifur Rahman, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received the 2005 MACE Engineering Educator of the Year Award.
Dr. Mohammad Alam, Professor and Chair of Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been elected a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), UK for his outstanding contributions in research.
Dr. Mohammad S. Alam, Professor and Chair, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering has been appointed as the Lead Guest Editor for a special issue on "Biometric Recognition" for the Journal of Applied Optics. This special issue has been scheduled for publication in May 2005.
