Dr. Mohammad S. Alam, Professor and Chair, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering presented an invited seminar on "Ultrafast Architectures and Algorithms for Target Detection and Tracking" in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan on December 18, 2002.

Dr. Houssain Kettani, Visiting Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering received the Best Paper Award for presenting his paper on "A Novel Approach to the Estimation of the Hurst Parameter in Self-Similar Traffic" at the 2002 IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers) Local Computer Networks Conference which was held in Tampa, Florida during November 6-8, 2002.

Dr. Mohammad S. Alam, Professor and Chair, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering presented an invited seminar on "Ultrafast Image Processing and Computing Architectures," at the University Alazhar Indonesia, Jakarta, Indonesia on October 3, 2002.

Dr. Mohammad S. Alam, Professor and Chair, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering presented an invited paper on "Parallel optoelectronic pattern recognition architectures and algorithms" at the 25th IEEE International Conference on Opto-electro-techniques and Laser Applications, which was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, during October 2-3, 2002.

Congratulations to Mr. Wesam A Sakla who received 2002 MACE outstanding student award. He graduated with a 4.0 GPA.

Congratulations to Mr. Ray Preston who has been selected as a Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics (CSEM) Research Scholar effective beginning with the Fall 2002 semester. As a CSEM Research Scholar, Mr. Preston will receive a stipend while conducting research under the guidance of Dr. Arifur Rahman and is expected to culminate his research experience with a professional publication or presentation in an appropriate regional or national forum.

A new scholarship, $2000 for the 2002-2003 academic year, is now offered to College of Engineering students by the Mobile Area Council of Engineers.  The scholarship is named the Wilford D. Raburn Engineering Scholarship in honor of Dr. W. D. Raburn, former Professor of Electrical Engineering and Assistant Dean of the College of Engineering.  Applicant must be a full-time 2nd semester sophomore, a U.S. citizen, and have a minimum CGPA of 2.75.  Call Carolyn Wertelecki at 461-1546 for application details, and submit completed application by May 6th.

On Thursday, April 4th, University President Gordon Moulton and Senior Vice President Patsy Covey visited the ECE Department. They toured the various ECE instructional and research facilities. Dr. Alam made a presentation on the progress and accomplishments made by the ECE department over the past 9 nine months in all areas including curriculum upgrade, laboratory improvement, funded research and scholarship. Dr. Alam also outlined ECE plans envisioned for the future. President Moulton and Dr. Covey commended the ECE faculty for their extraordinary accomplishments during this short period and pledged their continued support for on-going and future ECE activities.

ECE Department just received a 2 million dollar grant from the Department of Energy for a research project on "Grid Independent Fuel Cell Operated Smart Home." Dr. Mohammad Alam is the PI/PD for this project. Co-PIs are Dr. P. Byrne, Dr. M. Doran, Dr. H. Pardue, Mr. R. Foley, Dr. A. Rahman, Dr. A. Sakla, and Dr. T. Thomas. Project Duration: January 2002 - December 2002.

On February 7, 2002, Dr. Peter C. Byrne was elected a Fellow of the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEE). Founded in 1871, the IEE is the largest professional engineering society in Europe and has a worldwide membership of just under 140,000. Dr. Byrne is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. His research interests include data acquisition and control.

Prof. Jyan Cai joined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in February 2002 as a Visiting Research Scholar from China. She is working with Dr. Mohammad Alam, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, on the development of Algorithms for Automatic Testing of Analog and Digital Circuits.

Dr. Mohammad S. Alam, Professor and Chair, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering served as a Guest Editor for a Special Issue of the Journal of Optical Engineering on "Advances in Pattern Recognition Techniques, Devices, and Algorithms." This special issue appeared in January 2002.
