Dr. Thomas G. Thomas, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, received the 2003 Engineering Professor of the Year Award from Tau Beta Pi Honor Society, College of Engineering, University of South Alabama.
Dr. Parker just received a 5-year research grant ($150K) on "Modeling and Manufacturing Structural Nanocomposites" from the National Science Foundation (NSF), joint project with Tuskegee University. Dr. Parker is the USA PI/PD.
The ECE Department just received a ~$1M grant from the Department of Energy on "Fuel Cell Operated Smart Microgrid Community". Dr. Alam is the PI/PD for this project. CO-PIs are Drs-Byrne, Rahman, Sakla, Simmons and Thomas.
Dr. Mohammad S. Alam, Professor and Chair, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering presented an Invited Seminar on " Ultrafast Pattern Recognition," at the BRAC University, Dhaka, Bangladesh on July 15, 2003.
Dr. Mohammad S. Alam, Professor and Chair, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering presented an Invited Seminar on "Pattern Recognition and Tracking" at Wright State University on June 24, 2003.
Dr. Peter Byrne, Associate Professor, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering received the "2003 Excellence in Teaching Award" from the College of Engineering in May 2003.
Dr. Mohammad S. Alam, Professor and Chair, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering received the Phi Kappa Phi "2003 Scholar of the Year Award" on April 10, 2003.
On Wednesday, April 2nd, University President Gordon Moulton and Senior Vice President Patsy Covey visited the ECE Department. They toured the various ECE instructional and research facilities. Dr. Alam made a presentation on the progress and accomplishments made by the ECE department over the past year in all areas including curriculum upgrade, laboratory improvement, funded research, scholarship and service activities. Dr. Alam also outlined ECE plans envisioned for the future. President Moulton and Dr. Covey commended the ECE faculty for their outstanding accomplishments during this short period and pledged their continued support for on-going and future ECE activities.
Amanda Wilhelmy, an ECE undergraduate student, was awarded the Wilford D. Raburn Engineering Scholarship ($2000) awarded by the Mobile Area Council of Engineers in February 2003. She received this scholarship for outstanding academic achievements and community activities.
Dr. Mazen Al-Khatib, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department just received a patent from the US patent office for a new fast wireless transmission technique. The new method can be used with digital modulation techniques to optimize power consumption, reduce cost while increasing the throughput of the system.
